On Saturday morning Clooney girls played Banner in U16B Shield semi final in the Banner GAA grounds. Bearing in mind that some of these girls on the Clooney and Banner teams played together in a Minor Team to win the Minor B Championship last month, it was always going to be a tight affair.

At half time, Clooney were down two points. After starting well with a point from wing forward Lauren Wall, Banner scored two points, before Emma Considine scored a goal from a free. With a short period the banner scored a goal and before half time a point.

HT: Clooney/Quin 1-1; Banner 1-3.

The Banner started well in the second half with two points to bring them four clear of Clooney mind way through the second half. However Clooney were not ready to give up and came back into it with a point from a Emma Considine free and after a scrabble in front of goals, Holly Deegan shot to back of net to level the match for the first time.

With less than five minutes to go centre forward Niamh McGee scored to bring Clooney into the lead for the first time since almost the beginning of the match. Clooney held on despite numerous attempts on goals by a strong Banner outfit.

FT: Clooney/Quin 2-3; Banner 1-5.

The Management Team of Michael Culligan, Darragh Ryan and David Sheehy was delighted with the performance of this young team and look forward now to the shield final in two weeks.
