U16B round 1.: Clooney-Quin 7-5 v 4-9 Clarecastle/Ballyea.
In an exciting game between two evenly matched teams the Clooney girls came out on top.
The game was fast paced and exciting and the work rate from Clooney was immense. Clarecastle were first on the scoreboard with a point but this was cancelled out with forwards forcing a 45 and a dipping shot from Ciara Halpin dropping to the Clarecastle net. Ciara then followed up with a point. In a game that ebbed and flowed Clarecastle equalised. As the sides traded scores with Clooney’s point coming from Roisin Keogh. The visitors then went a point ahead before Roisin Corbett won the ruck and stormed through the defence scoring a goal. Rachel Daffy in her first u16 outing pointed with Roisin Corbett following up with a similar score after a long pass from Niamh McGee. The half wasn’t done though as the visitors added 1-1 just before the half time break. So it stood even at 2-4 a piece.
Clooney-Quin had four newcomers to the age and with one of these already on the score board a second was to follow with Molly Slattery putting pressure on a Clarecastle clearance and forcing a mistake and blocking the ball to the net. Clarecastle answered with a point. With Roisin Keogh pointing and the Rachel Daffy getting a goal to put Clooney two points clear. Clarecastle put on the pressure though and scored 1-2 to bring just a point between the sides. Then Molly Slattery pounced for her second, when she was sent through by Niamh McGee, to be answered immediately with a Clarecastle point. Then the hard working wing back Ciara O’Connor who had pushed up with the play, was on the end of a Roisin Keogh pass of the ball and from 21 yards hand passed to the net as she was bottled up with no room to strike. Clarecastle did come again with 1-1 but Ciara Halpin goaled to give Clooney-Quin the deserved win.
All over the field Clooney-Quin were impressive. Sinead McGee at centre back, Moya Dunne at centre forward and the mid field of Ciara Halpin and Emer Moynihan worked hard with Ciara O’Connor, Roisin Keogh and Roisin Corbett getting through huge work.
Cliodhna Ryan excelled at full back flanked by two able debutants Emer Hynes and Holly Deegan.
Clooney are away for the next game with neighbours Tulla.
