Following victories over Burren Gaels and Banner Ladies in recent weeks, Clooney U14’s Green Team played Fergus Rovers on Sunday evening in Clooney in the U14A Cup semi final.
In May when Clooney and Fergus Rovers met in the League, Clooney came out on top with a small margin of two points. This semi final was therefore expected to be a close affair and it was up till half time at least.
Fergus Rovers were first to score but Clooney followed with two Ella Taylor goals and a pointed free from corner forward Eimear McGee. With Clooney ahead by two goals, Fergus Rovers scored two points before half time to reduced the deficit to four.
HT: Clooney/Quin 2-1; Fergus Rovers 0-3.
Five minutes into the second half, there was still four between the teams after a point from Clooney (Orna Moynihan) and one point from Fergus Rovers. However that was their last score of the game. The end score does not reflect the efforts put in by Clooney to keep it that way. The backs put in tremendous effort to keep out what we’re to be sure scores on many occasions. The mid field duo of Claire Murphy and Orna Moynihan worked tirelessly to ensure Clooney remained on top. The forwards acted as the first line of defense as is the mantra at training.
The coaches Liam Clohessy, Ed Manley and Tom Moynihan were delighted with the team performance that means a first ever U14 A Cup Final for Clooney Ladies.
