When the draw was made for the County Senior Hurling Championship almost three months ago, the clash between Clooney/Quin and Tulla has been foremost on the minds of both sets of players and their respective management groups. On Sunday, last, the long wait ended as these close neighbours met in the final game of Round 1. Usually, these affairs start off nervy, with players taking some time to settle into the match. On this occasion however, this didn’t apply to the Clooney/Quin players, who, with wind assistance, were fast out of the traps, and turned in a confident and determined performance to secure a merited four points victory at the end on an 0-18 to 3-5 scoreline. An eleven point haul from Peter Duggan, assisted by fellow scorers Ryan Taylor(4),Sean Ward(2) and Richard Hennessy(1) proved that taking the points when the opportunity arises will reap rich dividends in the end. This win not only sends the side into Round 2 of the Championship, it also secures the Club’s Senior status into the 2016 season. And, if the first Round draw was interesting, the second round draw threw up a mouth-watering clash with our neighbours from the south-west border in Newmarket, the 2012 County Champions. The date for this game is dependent on how the County teams fare in their respective Competitions. When it does come around, you can be guaranteed it will be game which will attract a large vocal attendance from both clubs!
